ICT and me

Over the years that I have been both a student and a teacher, there has been more and more emphasis on ICT and how it can be incorporated into lessons. From the humble powerpoint to more creative platforms like koobits and audacity, ICT in the classroom has indeed gone through significant transformations.

One class I remembered particularly well was a Secondary 2 class in TKGS. It was an English lesson and it was conducted in the computer lab.
It was a vocabulary lesson and the teacher gave us a set of descriptive words that described emotions. The class was kind of a prep class for a composition assignment as well as the coming oral exam.
The class was an English niche class (made up of students who had scored well for their english exams)

She set us to take a look at the different dictionaries available online to find out the meanings of this word and which word class they belong to.

After finding out the information, we were tasked to share with the class our findings and also how we would use the words in a sentence to give it more nuance etc.

This was useful as it gave us the opportunity to increase our vocab and interact directly with the words as we found out how words such as 'maudlin' was pronounced etc.
It also opened us up to different dictionaries and sources available online.

  1. Hey Wafa! the english lesson you recounted seems to be have been made more interesting by the teacher although it may have been a simple activity. But activities like that, no matter how simple they are, when they involved using a computer they always got the students engaged for sure. I do hope that when we begin our teaching, we will be able to use ICT more effectively since we also have more options now to engage our students in class.

  2. This is an interesting way to conduct an English class and I believe the kind of research done by the students will continue to be a valuable one for many years to come.

  3. Wow, the integration of ICT into the class lesson is very seamless and I can see that you and your classmates have benefited from it. I think presently there are an increasing amount of class/modules that require students to make use of ICT as part of learning. For example, back in university when I was completing my minor in Drama, one of the modules that I took was 'Drama and Alternative Media'. This course saw me engaging in various forms of ICT which can be incorporated into our performances. I had loads of fun discovering and learning new tools which is advantageous for me to use in the present as a teacher! :D
